Description

The game MEGAWARS, an upcoming MMO GSW (Grand Strategy Wargame), started out simply as “War” when it was developed at the University of Texas.

History

Early history

MegaWars was a series of realtime online multiplayer space empire building games which were hosted on CompuServe in the 1980s and lasted well into the 1990s. The original MegaWars I was a port of Decwar, originally developed at the University of Texas at Austin. MegaWars II, an ill advised port for the TRS-80 Color Computer was never released. MegaWars III followed, based on an entirely different engine originally developed by Kesmai.

Enter Crimson Leaf LLC

Following the eventual demise of MegaWars III, David Baity, CTO of Crimson Leaf LLC, began an independent project to revive the game as a graphically-driven, browser-based game. Re-titling his edition MegaWars III: The Rebirth, Baity, working with a community of original players, reverse-engineered an updated version of the CompuServe experience, even allowing the player to play much of the game through command-line controls. Later iterations would introduce a number of experimental features that would set the stage for the project’s current design.

Stage Set for MegaWars.net

In 2013, desiring to turn his part time hobby into a full-time business, Baity sought advice from veteran game designer Neal Hallford. Together they began a complete reevaluation of the project with the aim of retaining the feel and flavor of the original MegaWars while introducing a much easier to use graphical interface. Progress began in late 2014 on a port to the Unity platform. Public alpha testing began in Q4 2016. Public beta test began in Q4 2017 with a release in Q4 2018.
